On Tuesday evening, Azerbaijan and Bulgarian champions Qarabag and Ludogorets will face off in the first leg of the Champions League third qualifying round. The game will take place at Tofiq Bahramov Stadium in Baku.
Qarabag were superdominant in the previous decade, winning nine league titles and once finishing as a runner-up. Besides their supremacy in their domestic league, they started to be regular participants in the group stage of European competitions. Last year, they even made it to the top 16 in the Europa League, where Bayer Leverkusen eliminated them (5:4 on aggregate) in a pretty close duel. This year, Qarabag dealt easily with Lincoln Red Imps in the previous round and then started great in the domestic league as well, beating Araz 4:1 in the first round. Currently, before the first leg against Ludogorets, the bookies see Qarabag as the favorite to secure the next round, offering odds around 1.65 on that bet.
Like Qarabag in Azerbaijan, Ludogorets dominates teams in Bulgaria and are a regular participant in the Group phase in Europe. Last year was their 13th domestic league title in a row. After a 4:1 in the first round against Aray, coach Qurban Qurbanov spoke to the media. He said he was satisfied with the result but acknowledged that he was dissatisfied with the behavior of some players. When asked about Ludogorets, the coach said they have a lot of experience as they have played in the group phases for the last nine years. The coach also noted they have to prepare seriously and to prevent Ludogorets from counterattacking.

In recent days, coach Georgi Dermendzhiev spoke about the upcoming match against Qarabag. He was not satisfied with a 1:0 defeat in the second leg against Dinamo Minsk, saying that his players were very tense, which led to individual mistakes. "In matches against a team like Qarabag, you can't make mistakes like in the games with Dinamo," the coach added. The 69-year-old coach also said he hopes they will have a more stable game on the road against Qarabag than they did against Dinamo.
