The USA women's football team is by far the most successful team at the Olympic Games, with four gold medals. However, the previous gold for the USA came in 2012. This year, the USA was perfect in the group phase with nine points. In the quarterfinal, most expected an easy win against Japan, but the Asian team fought bravely, so although the USA had 71% ball possession and more good chances, the regular ninety minutes finished with a goalless draw. The USA hero of the game was Trinity Rodman, who scored the game-winning goal in extra time. 

The German women's football team won four medals at the Olympic Games, but the only gold came in 2016. That was also their last medal. Germany was in the same group as the USA this year, and that was the only defeat for Horst Hrubesch's team so far. In the quarterfinal, Germany matched with Canada, the 2021 gold medalist, and Hrubesch's team needed penalties to progress to the semifinal. Canada finished that game with 16 shots on the goal, more than the opponent, but after failing to score, they were punished during the penalty shootout.
